Black Mage (黒魔道士, Kuro Madōshi?, lit. Black Sorcerer) is a recurring job class in the Bravely series. It has appeared in every installment, serving as one of the first jobs obtained in most titles.

Profile[]

Black Mages specialize in offensive magic that features magical attacks of the fire, water, and lightning elements, while generally also featuring some combination of a dark-elemental spell, draining magic, and status-inflicting spells.

Black Mages always have very polarized stats, being geared towards MP and magic-based attack and defense stats, but generally have very poor stats on the physical side. Black Mages also have higher ranks in magic-oriented gear, such as rods, staves, and light armor.

The Black Mage job is acquired in the prologue, being obtained after defeating the Asterisk holder Ominas Crowe. It is one of the few jobs that is required rather than available in an optional side quest.

The job command of the Black Mage is Black Magic, allowing them to use 6 levels of offensive spells, including the Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder lines, several status-inflicting spells, some draining spells, and their ultimate spell Dark.

The Black Mage job is available in chapter 2, requiring completion of a side quest in order to choose to battle Ominas Crowe.

The job command of the Black Mage is again Black Magic, allowing them to use 7 levels of offensive spells, including their returning Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder lines, draining spells, and Dark, as well as a new ultimate spell in Flare, though without the status-inflicting spells from the previous installment.

The Black Mage job is the second job acquired in the game, obtained not from a boss battle but rather at the same time that Elvis joins the party, with him being the current Asterisk holder, coming to possess it following the passing of the previous Asterisk holder, his mentor Emma.

The job's Black Magic skillset includes the familiar Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder lines, with each one now having a fourth level, as well as one returning status-inflicting spell in Poison.

Etymology[]

The Black Mage job originates from the Final Fantasy series, being introduced in the very first installment. Like the Bravely series, the job specializes in Black Magic and is one of the first jobs obtained in titles featuring a job system. The Black Mage is physically frail but a hard-hitting party member when well-protected, and all the core attributes of the iconic job class are present in its Bravely incarnations.

Since its inclusion, the Black Mage has been one of the most iconic recurring mascots in the series, with several titles featuring Black Mages as key player characters. The Black Mage is in some installments not the ultimate Black Magic specialist, being succeeded by an upgraded form known as the Magus, whose Bravely variant is the Arcanist job.
