The Black Mage is job in Bravely Default II. It is one of the first jobs unlocked in the game, being the default job of Elvis Lesley, who joins the party as a level 3 Black Mage at the start of the game. The Black Mage specializes in Black Magic, a potent area of magic boasting a variety of elemental damage-dealing spells as well as the ability to inflict poison status.

The Asterisk holder for this job is Elvis after inheritting the item from his mentor Lady Emma, who possessed it before him.

Appearance[]

When equipped with the Black Mage asterisk, characters will be garbed in unique black outfits that vary on the character's gender. When male characters are Black Mages, they will don black overcoats and fedora hats. Elvis's version is based heavily on Lady Emma's Black Mage outfit, with the same yellow band and cravat, and Seth’s version is similar but with a red band and cravat instead. Female characters will simply don black hooded coats, with Gloria uniquely having her hood over her head.

Job overview[]

The Black Mage has strong magical attack and high MP but low defensive and physical attributes. The Black Mage uses staves with S rank proficiency, allowing for maximal usage of the magical stat boosts those weapons grant.

The Black Mage's default Speciality is useful due to its ability to constantly restore a small portion of the user's MP when using the Default command. However, the Black Mage's second Speciality, High-Velocity Spells, is incredibly useful due to its function of preventing all elemental attack spells from being nullified or absorbed, allowing the spells to still deal damage. However, this Speciality will not ignore halved damage from elemental resistances or the Reflect status.

Any magic based job is useful as a sub-job for the Black Mage. An excellent combination would be the Oracle job, which gives the Black Mage access to the Triple family of spells, and when combined with the High-Velocity Spells passive, it allows the user to deal three magical attacks on the target. Red Mage can also be a useful pairing by giving a total of five elements in weakness coverage as well as the spell Disaster for major damage and the Heal spells to restore HP in a pinch without relying on a mediocre restorative power stat. When paired with the Red Mage's Chainspell through the aid of the Sub-Job Speciality 2 passive, it allows the Black Mage to have the potential to cast eight elemental spells in succession. Another combination choice would be the Arcanist job, so long as the player does not equip any Sub-Job Speciality access passives, allowing the Black Mage to have access to the Dark, Comet, and Meteor spells.

The Black Mage's Special is Iceberg Blast (マナアイシクル, Mana Aishikuru?, lit. Mana Icicle), an attack that strikes all enemies with a powerful water-elemental magic attack, and has the extra effect of increasing the party's Magical Defence by 30% for a short duration of time. In order to perform the move, players must have the character as a Black Mage use their Black Magic abilities 13 times in battles.

Behind the scenes[]

Elvis notably depicted wearing this job’s outfit in official artwork rather than his Freelancer outfit and is always depicted wearing the Black Mage outfit. Despite this, the final trailer for the game does show a cutscene of Elvis obtaining the asterisk, similar to other bosses.
