Etymology[]
The Cure series of spells originate from the Final Fantasy series of games. The spells were first introduced in the original Final Fantasy as White Magic spells usable by the White Mage and Red Mage jobs. While the initial variants could only be targeted at a single ally, with the Heal line of spells being automatically group-cast, Final Fantasy II introduced the their current ability to be group-cast at a reduction in potency per character affected.
Although called Curaga in English, the Japanese name of the spell more likely derives from the English word Care. The English word "care" is standardly transliterated into Japanese as ケア (kea?).
In most Final Fantasy titles featuring four tiers of Cure magic, the 4th tier spell known as Curaga in Japanese is known as Curaja in English localizations, which is a separate ability entirely known Careja (ケアルジャ, Kearuja?) in the original Japanese language versions. This change is due to the localization teams changing the 3rd tier Japanese Curada (ケアルダ, Kearuda?, lit. Careda) spell into Curaga in most releases. However, this change is not kept in the English versions of the first two installments of the Bravely series, where the names Curada and Curaga are retained for the third and fourth healing spells respectively.
