Etymology[]
One meaning of the word drain is to deprive something of vitality, often to take it for oneself, and that is the meaning reflected by this spell, whose function is to take HP from a target and gives it to the spell's user.
The spell originates from the Final Fantasy series, debuting in Final Fantasy II as a Black Magic spell. It was a high-level spell in Final Fantasy III but at level 4 in Final Fantasy V, just as it is as part of Black Magic in the first two Bravely games. It is instead part of the Arcanist job in Bravely Default II, reflecting that job's nature as a variant of the Black Mage successor Magus, as well as Drain's status as Arcane Magic in Final Fantasy XII, a school of magic with many similar abilities to Necromancy.
