Elvis Lesley is a main character and one of the four playable heroes in Bravely Default II.
Biography[]
Elvis Lesley is a scholar from Wiswald, a member of the Lesley family who helped found the city, who studied magic under the tutelage of the renowned mage Lady Emma. After her passing, he embarked on a quest to decipher the secrets of a book he inherited from her, learning that he must acquire Asterisks for translation. While beginning his journey, Elvis already possesses the Black Mage Asterisk, also inherited from Lady Emma, which allowed him to read a small part of it, and he is joined by Adelle, who offered her services as a bodyguard in her own effort to track down the Asterisks, for which Elvis was looking to help him read the book. Hearing of Asterisks present in Halcyonia, the two later end up there, where they come to Seth’s aid during a battle with monsters. The duo soon join Gloria’s quest to recover the crystals, seeing that it will coincide with their aim of recovering Asterisks while also seeing it is the right thing to do and a promising adventure.
After recovering the Water Crystal from Savalon, the heroes return to Elvis’s home of Wiswald upon learning of a Crystal there, and they find the town covered in trees. Elvis learns that his friends Roddy and Lily have been acting strangely since the death of their daughter Mona, and both the couple and Galahad are revealed to be brainwashed by the Pictomancer Folie, who committed numerous atrocities to create a masterpiece. When the heroes and their Wiswaldian friends confront Folie, Elvis’s tranquil fury enables him to receive the blessing of the Earth Crystal to help them defeat the crazed Pictomancer to save Wiswald and recover the Crystal.
Elvis continues to fight alongside the other heroes to recover the crystals and save the world from the army of Holograd. When the Arcanist Vigintio, who was once defeated and killed by Lady Emma, returns to Wiswald, now undead, and captures all the residents save Roddy to turn into an undead army, Elvis and the others are able to free Roddy and take his advice to find a piece of wald ash to use in order to kill Vigintio for good, a task Elvis ultimately completes after a tough battle, finishing what his mentor had started.
Later, after the party obtains the Bravebearer Asterisk and has possession of all 23 Asterisks, Elvis can fully translate the book and learns that it is a 24th Asterisk, that of the Librarian, into which the Night's Nexus sealed her soul.
Appearance[]
Elvis is an middle-aged man with long light brown hair tied back into a ponytail, a trimmed beard across his jaw, and blue eyes. In his Freelancer outfit, he wears a tan overcoat with a bright yellow flower on the lapel, a long blue scarf, a red sweater vest, white undershirt with a tie, white gloves, light grey plaid pants tied up at the knees, long argyle socks, and short black leather boots.
However, Elvis is most prominently featured in promotional material wearing his Black Mage attire, featuring a long black overcoat tied at the waist with a hooded shawl, a yellow cravat, a black fedora with a yellow band, black gloves, long black pants, black and white dress shoes, and one small black earring in his left ear. This is due to him being the Black Mage Asterisk holder, as he notably wears his Freelancer attire in flashbacks featuring Lady Emma, who was the Asterisk holder instead at that time.
Personality[]
Elvis has an easygoing personality and takes a very big-picture attitude toward situations, frequently using the phrase “Don’t sweat the details”. While he is of noble birth, as the Lesley family were among Wiswald’s founders, he does not act in a manner usually expected of nobility, often being somewhat vulgar with his language and contextually inappropriate, though he also frequently has rather wise and insightful things to say.
Elvis is a scholar with a sense of commitment to his task of uncovering the meaning of his book, and possesses strong curiosity that drives him in all that he does, but his philosophy, shared with the Earth Crystal that chose him, is that it doesn’t matter what else he gets up to along the way so long as he completes his task in the end. Related to that mentality, Elvis has a kind heart and is always willing to break from his task to help those in need, especially when that task is related, as recovering the Crystals is, but even when not. Elvis rarely holds grudges, only doing so in the most heinous of situations, and is a fundamentally amiable person, always preferring to see the similarities between people before the differences and to get along with people whenever possible. He is especially devoted to his friends Seth, Gloria, Adelle, Roddy, Lily, and Galahad.
Gameplay[]
Differently from other entries in the series, all of the characters’ base stats are the same, so his stats are fully dependent on his current job and level, as well as whatever Booster Buns have been used on him. However, he does join the party already at level 3, and at job level 3 as a Black Mage, which, while only a small advantage in job points overall, does make him the most suited to serving as a Black Mage early on.
