Galahad Kelly is the Shieldmaster Asterisk holder in Bravely Default II. He is a loyal guard of various important buildings in Wiswald.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Galahad is a middle-aged man of large physique with blonde hair and glasses. While normally he wears the white robes of Wiswald, as the Shieldmaster Asterisk holder he wears a heavy suit of armor with a castle-like design. In both states he is seen wielding the Portcullis Hammer and a heavy shield styled after a castle.
Personality[]
Galahad is a very loyal person, to the land of Wiswald that took him in and especially to his friends Roddy, Lily, and Elvis. He has a strong sense of responsibility to those in his care, though this often leaves him with deep feelings of guilt for failing to protect them, requiring his friends to remind them it is not his fault.
Story[]
Galahad was originally born in Rimedhal, with him later revealed to have been the brother of Gladys, from whom he got separated after their parents died, with him coming to live with distant relatives in Wiswald. Since then, Wiswald has been his home, and he has served as a guard, protecting key buildings such as the Institute of Magical Inquiry.
He was guarding the Institute on the day that Mona came to visit her father and died in what was believed to be an accident, and he blamed himself for her death due to having let her go in and have been unable to prevent her death. This guilt was seized upon by Folie, who gave him the Shieldmaster Asterisk and a painting of Mona, the latter of which brought Galahad under Folie's control, with her telling him he can help bring Mona back to life by guarding Wiswald's Tower, in which Folie had placed the Earth Crystal that she had stolen from Musa.
When the heroes arrived in Wiswald, they noticed the light of the crystal and came up to Galahad, whose state of guarding the tower surprised Elvis, who remembered him being a guard for the Institute. While the conversation seemed amicable at first, a mention of the Tower sent Galahad into a rage that caused him to fight the heroes. Due to his heavy armor, they could not defeat him and thus had to flee.
After rescuing Roddy and Lily from Folie' control, the heroes returned to the tower to see it unguarded, but confronted Galahad and the Picto monsters at the top, with the six together defeating Galahad and freeing him from Folie's control, with him accompanying the others to set things right.
The seven all went to Folie's lair, wherein they learned that Mona's death was not an accident but an intentional part of Folie's plan, prompting all seven to join and defeat Folie. The heroes bid farewell to Galahad and the McGranates, with them now being able to return to their lives and rest easier knowing Mona's death was not their fault.
Galahad's life is shaken once again however after he learns that in the battle to defend Rimedhal from the invading forces of Holograd, his sister Gladys lost her life. He came to Rimedhal to pay respects but was troubled by the revelation that Gladys had perpetrated acts of cruelty, in the name of the Judgements, that had made many dislike her and led to a follower citizen of Rimedhal being the one who killed her. To fix this, the heroes bring residents of Rimedhal to show that while many still have a cold view of Gladys, they know they owe her a great deal for defending their land, and that for all her crimes they view her overall as a hero. Assured that his sister ultimately lived a life of respect, Galahad finds peace on the matter and returns to Wiswald.
Gameplay[]
Boss Encounters[]
Galahad is a Shieldmaster, making him a foe with very high defenses that is not easy to take out.
When fought during chapter 2 he fights alongside three allies, Picto-Beleth, Picto-Amrita, and Picto-Mona, he uses abilities to take hits for them, preventing them from being damaged and keeping them around to attack his enemies. The first fight against Galahad is not meant to be won, and doing so causes Folie to reset the fight, forcing the correct events to occur. The second fight is a stronger party against the same Galahad, making it a fairer fight. Galahad possesses the Shieldcraft skillset, designed to make his team difficult to take down. His ability Defender of the People lets him take hits for his allies, Anticritical allows him to reduce the chance of attacks directed at him being critical hits, improving his own survivability, Reprisal makes those attacking him sustain half of the damage they inflict, which slows down the pace of incoming attacks, and Blinding Flash attempts to blind all enemies, making his team sustain less damage. Galahad also can perform powerful attacks with the ability Weighty Blow.
When faced again in the Halls of Tribulations III, Galahad protects his allies Gladys and Glenn with similar skills, using Personal Protection to take attacks for allies, Quit Critting to reduce chance of being critically hit even more, and Mirrored Shield to redirect all damage sustained. He additionally still possesses Blinding Flash and Weighty Blow.
Companion[]
After losing his Asterisk, he accompanies the party for the remainder of chapter 2, taking up the single companion slot alongside Roddy and Lily. He can both attack with the Portcullis Hammer and use the Shieldcraft ability Blinding Flash.
Etymology[]
In Arthurian legend, Sir Galahad is a knight of King Arthur's Round Table. He is renowned for his gallantry and purity and is one of the three knights to succeed in finding the Holy Grail.[1]
