Etymology[]
Holy originates from the Final Fantasy series, often appearing as the strongest offensive White Magic spell available, and sometimes the only offensive White Magic spell outside of against undead monsters. It was introduced in the original Final Fantasy, as powerful White Magic spell available only to the White Wizard class. It has been a similarly high-level spell in most games since, often being the only accessible ability to inflict holy/light-elemental damage.
The Spiritmaster job being able to use Holy in Bravely Default II harkens back to the job being able to use Holy in its original appearance of Final Fantasy III, as the job (known as Devout in its original appearance) was able to have access to higher levels of White Magic than the original White Mage job.
