Barras Lehr, a recurring series Monk.
Monk (モンク, Monku?, lit. Monk) is a recurring job class in the Bravely series. It has appeared in every installment, serving as one of the first jobs obtained in most titles.
Profile[]
Monks specialize in pure physical offense. While they are generally maximally proficient with staves, they work best fighting bare-handed, or sometimes wearing knuckles. In addition to their might as attackers, Monks possess the Martial Arts command, which always provides them with several abilities related to performing particularly strong attacks, raising their attack power, sacrificing HP, piercing Default, and also self-healing.
Monks always have very polarized stats, being geared towards HP and physical attack and defense stats, but generally have very poor stats on the magical side. Unlike many physical jobs, Monks do not specialize in wearing heavy armor, instead relying on their natural bulk.
Appearances[]
Bravely Default[]

The Monk job is acquired in the prologue, being obtained after defeating the Asterisk holder Barras Lehr. It is one of the few jobs that is required rather than available in an optional side quest.
The job command of the Monk is Martial Arts. Monks have an S in staves but specialize in fighting with knuckles or bare-handed due to their Knuckle Lore specialty. They also have reasonably good agility.
Bravely Second: End Layer[]

The Monk job is available in chapter 3, requiring completion of a side quest in order to choose to battle Barras Lehr.
The job command of the Monk is again Martial Arts, featuring largely similar abilities as before.
Bravely Default II[]

The Monk job is the fourth job acquired in the game, earned by defeating the Asterisk holder Horten in the Vale of Sighs at the end of the prologue.
The job's Martial Arts skillset features similar abilities but with a greater emphasis on sacrificing HP, which most of their attacking abilities do, and they also have several fire-imbued moves. The high-level Martial Arts ability Pressure Point has been greatly improved, now piercing both Default and physical defence. Monks are slower compared to previous games, and their abilities for proficiency in fighting bare-handed are not as good and are no longer innate, but Monks also have many ways to improve their critical hit chance, making them potent fighters, though ones that must be careful not to sacrifice too much HP without healing.

Etymology[]
A Monk is an individual who practices a lifestyle of religious asceticism, often involving heavy physical discipline. Monks are often popularly associated with prowess in the martial arts due to that physical discipline, and this informs their depictions throughout the JRPG genre.
The Monk job originates from the Final Fantasy series, being introduced in the very first installment. The non-magical Final Fantasy jobs did not originally possess job commands, but the early Monk still specialized in using nothing but their fists and wearing only very light armor to deftly take down foes, with power exceeding the heavily equipped Warrior and Knight jobs. Early games with the job system generally made the Monk one of the first jobs available, as it is in most Bravely games. Final Fantasy V first gave the Monk new abilities, with Chakra being a self-healing command on which Inner Alchemy is based. The Monk is a largely simple but powerful job, and that nature is reflected in its Bravely versions.
