Bravely Default Wiki

The Monk is a job in Bravely Default II. It is one of the first jobs to be unlocked in the game, specializing in fighting unarmed. With their Martial Arts skillset, Monks are able to unleash powerful techniques to damage their enemies, while also being able to use abilities that recover and buff themselves. The Monk sports high HP and physical attack stats, making it a strong asset in combat.

The Asterisk holder for this job is Horten, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Halcyonia.

Appearance[]

When using the Monk Asterisk, all characters will sport a martial arts gi with black or white trousers. The cast will also have flower corsages on their right shoulder area, with female characters uniquely having an extra set of flowers pinned to their hair. Seth's version of the outfit is the one that most closely matches Horten's outfit.

Job overview[]

Monks are powerful, purely physical fighters who excel at inflicting critical hits.

In-game description.

The Monk by default has decent proficiencies in staves and spears. However despite the job's innate weapon proficiencies, once the player learns the job's Bare-Knuckle Brawler passive, the character as a Monk will have their attack increase while fighting with no weapons equipped. This element to the Monk can be helpful when fighting against enemies that resist or fully nullify certain weapon-type damage.

The job's Martial Arts skills give access to a variety of skills that can deal heavy damage to targets, such as Strong Strike and Flying Heel Drop. The Firebird ability can be helpful when fighting enemies weak to fire damage - being able to deal large damage to the targets and further lower their fire resistance, allowing for following fire-elemental techniques to deal heavier damage afterwards. Additionally, abilities such as Qigong Wave and Pressure Point are convenient means of inflicting heavy damage against targets Defaulting, due to both abilities piercing through the status.

Martial Arts also includes a variety of supportive moves that allow the character as a Monk to recover their own HP and MP, while also increasing physical attack power. When combined with their default Speciality passive, Concentration, Monks also have the ability to increase their critical chance for the entirety of the battle by using their supportive skills.

While a majority of skills cost HP to use, this cost can easily be mitigated with proper healing by the Monk's supportive arsenal, or by White Mage healing abilities.

The Monk's Special is Eternal Inferno (炎華硬爬山, Enkakōhazan?, lit. Scaling Fire Blossom), an attack deals a single powerful fire-elemental physical attack to an enemy, and has the extra effect of increasing the party's restorative power and critical chance by 15% for a short duration of time. In order to perform the move, players must have the character as a Monk use their Martial Arts abilities 13 times in battles.

Behind the scenes[]

When designing the party as Monks, the group was initially going to wear face paint similar to Horten as a Monk. However, this design element was dropped when transferred to the game models.

The flowers worn by the characters in their Monk forms are Japanese Hydrangeas, also known as Ajisais (アジサイ, Ajisai?). Each colors of the flowers have a specific meaning that reflect the characters wearing them; Gloria's pink represents heartfelt compassion, Adelle's blue symbolize apology, and Elvis's purple symbolize the desire to deeply understand something.
