The Night's Nexus

The Night's Nexus is the main antagonist of Bravely Default II. It is a force of darkness that aims to absorb all the world's knowledge and memories. It is battled during the second default ending and its true ending.

Story[]

Before Bravely Default II[]

The Night’s Nexus was once a human from the royal house of Musa named Inanna, sister to the current Musa’s king of that time. On her travels with her beloved, Inanna visited the fairy village of Mag Mell and entered its catacombs to partake from the Fount of Knowledge. While its waters granted Inanna knowledge of their world, it corrupted her with an maddened obsession to know everything as she was banished by the fairy queen who then concealed Mag Mell so no human can set foot and end up repeating Inanna’s actions.

Inanna used her gained knowledge to create the Librarian Asterisk, a unique asterisk in a form of a book which she sealed her soul in to become immortal. But Inanna’s corruption worsened over time, killing her beloved and then transforming into a god-like creature whose only purpose is to consume all knowledge and memories to return them to the void.

The Musan king, accepting that his sister is gone while informed by Lady Esmeralda that creature could not be defeated, is forced to sacrifice himself to seal the Night’s Nexus away with the aid of the Crystals. But the seal would only last two centuries at most, meaning the Crystal's energy would need to be refueled and another ruler of Musa would need to sacrifice themselves to keep the seal active. Between the time of its first sealing and the journey of King Godric, the Librarian Asterisk tome would somehow find its way within the tome archives in Wiswald.

Fifty years before the events of Bravely Default II, the Nexus would become unsealed once more and would need to be sealed once again. At this time King Godric of Musa, Sir Sloan, Lady Emma, and Queen Aileen of the Fairies took up the mantle as the new Heroes of Light and did battle with the Nexus. Despite their efforts to prevent Godric from sacrificing himself, they are unable to prevent the Night’s Nexus from continuously reviving herself as she shattered Sir Sloans’s asterisk. With no other choice, Godric used the powers of the Crystals to seal the Nexus once more, but at the cost of his life. With the Nexus sealed once again, it had appeared that the seal would be active for another 200 years.

However, a rogue fairy named Edna is corrupted from coming into contact with the Night’s Nexus, stealing Mag Mell’s Asterisks and bestowing them to the Holograder Empire and manipulate it them into destroying Musa and take the crystals so their power would be diminished before breaking the seal on the Nexus.

Twin Ages[]

Gloria Against the Nexus from BDII

Gloria sacrifices herself in the book's vision.

As the Nexus is almost unsealed, Seth's party travels to the ruins below Musa. Before they enter the final chamber where the Edna is preparing the final steps in her plan, they receive a vision from Elvis's book. During the vision, the party tries to reason with Edna, but she becomes further corrupted by the Nexus's influence, harnessing its power to fight the party.

After Edna is defeated by the party, the Nexus awakens and breaks free of her seal, before taking in Edna. Just before the Nexus is able to strike, Gloria prays to the crystals for assistance, before sacrificing her life to extend the seal for another two centuries.

Twin Cages[]

After the party witnesses the vision, Seth and the others agree to take another path to defeat the Nexus without sacrificing Gloria, the Heroes leave for Mag Mell with Edna allowed to continue the ritual uninterrupted. Edna successfully summons the Night's Nexus, before the Nexus turns Edna to stone and escapes from the Chamber of Sealing.

Ch6 Nexus Battles the Party from BDII

The party encounters the revived Nexus within the Fount of Knowledge.

The Nexus is then encountered by Seth's party at the bottom of the Fount of Knowledge, where she begins to attack. As the party continuously attempts to defeat it, they realize that it keeps regenerating with no sign of stopping. Eventually, this culminates into the Nexus devouring the party's Asterisks, leaving them helpless. The fairies are forced to freeze Mag Mell, and as a result, the Nexus in time. All of the party except for Adelle escape before the fairies' domain is frozen, as Adelle believed that she had to atone for her sister's fate.

Twin Pages[]

Once the party manages to find all of the Asterisks, Elvis will begin to translate his book, which is revealed to be the Librarian Asterisk that the Nexus keeps its memories in. Once its memories are overwritten by the player, the party receives a vision of not only the Nexus, but also of the old lady that provided Seth a boat, who is revealed to be to Queen Aileen of the fairies.

Nexus Final Battle from BDII

The Nexus attempting to absorb the party's memories.

With Aileen's assistance, the party manages to track down the Nexus at the Isle of Nothingness in the Outer Oceans, while being aided by other multiple versions of Seth in the process. With the Nexus left unable to regenerate from its memories being overwritten, it is forced to attack the party. During the fight, she fully breaks free of the seal and harnesses her true power, devouring Gloria's, Elvis's, and Adelle's memories in the process. With Seth's assistance, the party manages to quickly regain their memories. However, the Night's Nexus begins to devour Seth's memories as well. However, this fails as he manages to Brave beyond limits and break free of the Nexus's influence. The Nexus is then defeated by the party, no longer needing to be sealed every two centuries.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

The Night's Nexus is depicted as a cocoon-like monster shrouded in torn black bandages formed from tar, with the only exposed portion of its body being its pale-green skin. During its second boss form, the Nexus will spawn giant claws on both sides of its body.

During the final boss fight, the Night's Nexus takes the form of a pale woman in a black dress formed from the loosened bandages of its previous form.

In a Famitsu interview with producer Amano, he said that the woman in Bravely Default II's cover art is not Gloria, but actually the Night's Nexus' human form before she got corrupted. Because of this, it can be assumed that Inanna bears a striking resemblance with Gloria.

Personality[]

The Night's Nexus has zero traces of humanity left within it, only having a desire for revenge towards all living creatures. It has maddening desire to absorb the worlds knowledge and return it to the void.

Gameplay[]

The Night's Nexus is fought a total of five times during the game - three times during the finale of Chapter 6, serving as the game's second false final boss, and two times as the true final boss during the finale of Chapter 7.

Spoilers end here.

Music[]

During the first three encounters in Chapter 6 and the first encounter during Chapter 7, the Night's Nexus's boss theme is Marionette of the Night -- Wisdom Lost to the Nexus. During Chapter 6, the boss theme is split into three separate parts, with each sequential battle playing a different portion of the piece.

When fought for the final time during Chapter 7, the Nexus's boss theme is Eyes That Gaze into the Nexus -- The Ones Who Gather Stars in the Night. During the scripted sequence, only the first half of the theme plays; however once the player completes several scripted events during the first phase, the entirety of the piece plays for the entire fight. The piece combines elements of the several Asterisk boss themes, along with the character themes and the theme of the Bravely series.

Both pieces were composed by REVO.
