Orpheus Tragoidia is a non-playable character in Bravely Default II, and is the bearer of the Bard Asterisk. He works as a minstrel under Bernard after being kicked out of Musa.
Profile[]
Appearence[]
Personality[]
Orpheus holds a very high opinion of himself and has a massive ego. He also shows little regard to others, often making snide remarks, including mocking Gloria over the fall of her kingdom. He usually ignores all critism against him and never takes the blame for his actions, and in turn, is heavily disliked.
However in later sidequests, Orpheus tries to make up for his mistakes he has made in the past.
Story[]
In his younger years, a singer visited the town Orpheus lived in, and the townspeople adored him. Ever since then, Orpheus aspired to be like that singer, and make people happy through his songs just like he did.
At one point of time and prior to the destruction of Musa, Orpheus became the court minstrel of Musa under Gloria's father. However, he was caught embezzling funds from the kingdom, and was banished from Musa.
Gameplay[]
Orpheus is usually accompanied by other enemies, and will fittingly sing them into a frenzy. He is fought a total of three times, and each time he will be the primary buffer of his teams. He is the first Asterisk holder of Savalon, and one of the many enemies to utilize counters. Additionally, Orpheus is battled as the first boss of the Bravely Default II Demo, the tactics employed to beat him there can be used to win here. However, due to the nature of the demo, any tactics employed in the full game may not necessarily work in the demo.
First Encounter[]
Orpheus serves as the tutorial boss to stacking buffs and debuffs and is assisted by two Toxolotls and two Diatrymas to help demonstrate how devastating it can be. The monsters will act very similar to how they usually do, but some of them may Default to spend two turns attacking. Orpheus additionally has two phases, Phase 1 and Phase 2. In Phase 1, Orpheus will spend most turns buffing his team's defenses, frequently Braving into deficit. Otherwise, he will Default to prepare to do a round of offensive buffs. If you cast magic, Orpheus will counter with Close Those Tired Eyes, which puts the offender to sleep. His monsters will be trying to inflict Poison and Slow while also dealing Wind or Physical damage. He will only enter Phase 2 if you defeat his monster allies, which is recommended as you need to defeat ALL enemies present. Phase 2 has Orpheus attacking you with Stone, an item that hits everyone for around 200 damage. His pattern changes quite a bit as he will use Stone or Attack instead of a buff. He will also attack at any point after getting 1 BP, which can catch some people off-guard. During this time, Orpheus will only have 1 buff active at a time, but he will still deal a good amount of damage for anyone who is heavily injured. This can be frustrating as low HP characters may barely get a turn to act. Castor makes this fight slightly easier by sometimes lowering any enemies' defenses, but he may end up using Attack instead.
Strategy (Full Game)[]
Taking out Orpheus first may be the ideal way to go, but keep in mind of the monsters. Your main focus should be to stay alive. This fight is more of a battle of attrition as at this point you will not have any Asterisks suitable for removing Orpheus's buffs. White Mages and Vanguards can be very helpful here, but be wary of Close Those Tired Eyes and use a Freelancer's Treat and items if it gets too bad. Using a Monk can be useful, but they may burn themselves out by using their abilities at the wrong time. The main issue is Orpheus's defense buff granting all his allies a damage taken % reduction, ensuring this will take a while. As long as everyone remains healed up and targets him, taking down Orpheus himself will be a little simpler. Having Star Pendants (available at Halcyonia and Savalon) can prevent Poison and Wind Talismans (available at Svalon) can help with the Wind damage, but the Slow can be very annoying as nothing at this point can prevent it. If you would prefer, you can defeat the other monsters first: the Diatryma are weak to Thunder and Bows, while the Toxlotl are weak to Spears and Water. Orpheus is weak to Spears, Bows, and Water, so use those when you can. When he is about to enter Phase 2, heal anyone who is at low HP and Default as soon as possible. The initial transition between Phases can be difficult, but afterwards, as long as you keep your healer awake, healed up, and decently armored, Orpheus should be a little easier.
