BDPB Ranger

Artemia Venus, a recurring series Ranger.

Ranger (狩人, Karyūdo?, lit. Hunter) is a recurring job class in the Bravely series. It has appeared in every installment, always being available in the second chapter.

Profile[]

Rangers specialize in wielding bows and using "Slayer" abilities that target specific enemy families for vulnerability-exploiting damage. In spite of being a physical job, Rangers do not have especially good physical attack, with their advantages instead in stats related to aim and critical hit rate, with a reasonably good speed stat, allowing them to deal powerful damage reliably nonetheless.

Rangers also have poor defensive stats, making them one of the frailer physical jobs, as well as weak magical stats, though that aspect is not much of an issue.

The Ranger job is acquired in chapter 2, being obtained in a side quest, obtained by defeating the Asterisk holder Artemia Venus.

The job command of the Ranger is Hunting. Rangers have an S in bows, which calculate their damage the dexterity stat, which has an S rank for Rangers, rather than the strength stat, though they do also have an S in daggers, which works based on their B in strength. Their skills consist mainly of Slayer abilities as well as Multiburst, which is a relatively powerful multi-hit move, and their passive abilities are related to improving their hit rate beyond its already high level.

The Ranger job is available in chapter 2, requiring completion of a side quest in order to choose to battle Artemia.

The job command of the Ranger is again Hunting, featuring largely similar abilities as before, though with the addition of being able to enter the Berserk status to increase their damage, and with their weapon of choice calculating damage the same way.

Bravely Default II[]

The Ranger job is acquired in chapter 2, earned by defeating the Asterisk holder Lily in the Wiswald Woods.

The job's Hunting skillset features similar abilities, though they now possess Humanoid Slayer to round out the Slayer set of abilities, with it being especially useful for hitting a weakness of most Asterisk holders. They also have more multi-hit moves, having both Quickfire Flurry and Grand Barrage, and they can also paralyse foes with Shadowbind. However, bows now determine damage based on the base physical attack stat as any other weapon does, though their mediocre physical attack is offset both by their high critical chance and their specialty Barrage, which boosts the damage of successive hits in the same turn.

Etymology[]

A Ranger is an individual who takes charge of protecting a wild, often forested area, and a hunter is someone who spends time in such areas trying to kill animals for some end, often with a projectile weapon like a bow.

The Ranger job originates from the Final Fantasy series, having been introduced in Final Fantasy III as a job specializing in the use of bows and arrows, with the latter originally being consumable items. The version of the job in Final Fantasy V introduced their emphasis on hit rate and multi-hit bow attacks.
