Seth is the main protagonist of Bravely Default II. He is a young sailor who is saved by the Wind Crystal at the start of the game after his life was threatened by a mysterious force. After washing up on the shores of the Excillant continent, he meets Princess Gloria and joins in her crusade to retrieve the stolen Crystals of the Kingdom of Musa.
While he is the main protagonist, Seth does not play a large role within the game's story at times, instead he often serves as a view-point to the game's narrative.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Seth is a young man with short windswept black-brown hair and brown eyes. In his Freelancer outfit, Seth wears a white shirt with a popped collar and rolled-up sleeves. On top of his shirt is an open sleeveless leather vest. He wears black, baggy pants that are tucked into black boots with floppy collars, and held in place with a wide belt. A red, patterned scarf is tucked into the belt at Seth's left hip, and the belt buckle resembles the outline of a fish. He also wears brown leather gloves.
Personality[]
Seth is a kind, compassionate young man with a fairly easygoing nature. He provides emotional support to his friends throughout their journey, particularly to Gloria. After Sir Sloan's death, Seth becomes Gloria's primary confidant and emotional rock, so to speak. Seth encourages Gloria to express herself more and think beyond her role as Princess of Musa. Seth occasionally shows a wry, sarcastic sense of humour, often in response to Elvis and Adelle's shenanigans. However, Seth has his own vices. During the introduction of B'n'D, Seth expresses a fondness for gambling. In regards to those outside of the party, Seth demonstrates a willingness to lend a hand to whoever may need it. He believes that, if he has managed to help even one person, then he has done a good job. He has a strong sense of justice, expressing disgust at characters like Adam and Vigintio.
Due to his background as a sailor, Seth is very knowledgeable of ways to waterproof and maintain canvas, as well as various kinds of sealife. He also knows how to defend himself with a dagger, which is his starting weapon at the beginning of the game. He also expresses a fondness for cats, which were used as mousecatchers onboard his ship. Since he is not from Excillant, Seth lacks a lot of information about the continent and must learn from other characters.
Story[]
Prologue:
Seth is a young seafarer from parts unknown whose ship gets shipwrecked off the coast of Excillant. Seth gets swept overboard and is saved by the Wind Crystal. The Wind Crystal leads Gloria and Sir Sloan to the beach near Halcyonia, where Seth has washed ashore. They take Seth to Halcyonia's inn to recover. After he awakens, Gloria and Sir Sloan introduce themselves to the young sailor. Seth then heads to the beach where he washed up where he encounters an old woman beset by Goblins. He teams up with two nearby travelers, Elvis and Adelle, to defeat the monsters. After the battle, the trio returns to town only to be accosted by a young boy, who informs them of Gloria and Sir Sloan's confrontation with Selene and Dag. They agree to help Sir Sloan rescue Gloria.
At the Outlaw's Hideout, Sir Sloan distracts the kidnappers, allowing Seth to free Gloria. However, Selene and Dag quickly recover and confront the party. At that moment, The Wind Crystal speaks to Seth. The Crystal reveals that the storm that sank Seth's ship had been caused by a mysterious figure that saw Seth as a threat and wished to eliminate him. Seth had actually died when his ship sank, but the Crystal revived him and swept him ashore. The Crystal offers Seth a choice: he can let go and die peacefully, or he can cling to life. Seth chooses the latter, earning the blessing of the Wind Crystal. The party fights Selene and Dag, taking their Asterisks after their defeat.
Back at Halcyonia, the party temporarily separates, with Sir Sloan and Gloria heading to the palace to report to King Veron. Seth meets the old woman that he rescued earlier, who lends him her boat as thanks for saving her life. During the test run, Seth receives a pretty stone. The party reconvenes at the inn, where Gloria explains the situation with the Crystals and the calamities caused by their misuse. Seth, Elvis, and Adelle agree to help Gloria, who accepts their aid at Sir Sloan's urging. That night, Sir Sloan recalls his travels with the original Heroes of Light 50 years before, and declares Seth to be his heir as the new Hero blessed by the Wind Crystal. Sir Sloan asks Seth to promise to protect Gloria, which Seth readily agrees to.
The party travels to the Vale of Sighs, where they meet with Prime Minister Horten. He activates the Monk Asterisk and attacks the party, but ultimately falls to their combined might. Adam appears and kills Horten. He demands the Wind Crystal and assaults the party when Gloria refuses to comply with his request. After defeating the party, Adam snatches the Wind Crystal and moves to finish the party off, only for Sir Sloan to interfere. Seth grabs Gloria's hand and runs, preventing her from turning back. Sir Sloan sacrifices himself in a fiery explosion, destroying the path and blocking Adam from pursuing the party.
Chapter 1:
After escaping the Vale of Sighs, the party heads to Savalon where they discover that the desert city has flooded. Suspecting that the flooding is due to the Water Crystal, they decide to head to the palace to seek answers. They meet with Prince Castor and Bernard, a member of the Council and owner of the gaming hall. Bernard blames the flooding on his men, who he claims made mistakes when digging tunnels in the Underground Reservoir. Doubting his words, the party and Prince Castor set out for answers. They search out Bernard's subordinates, Orpheus and Anihal, who point them towards Bernard's mansion. In the mansion's basement, they discover the Water Crystal, but Bernard interrupts them before they can reclaim it. Gloria receives the Crystal's blessing and the party fights Bernard. Prince Castor appears, only to cut down Bernard and arrests the party on false charges.
In the dungeon, the party meets Prince Pollux, who has been imprisoned by his brother. Anihal releases them, allowing the party to confront Castor in the palace. They defeat Castor and reveal the truth of his machinations to the guards. Castor perishes by falling off the balcony into the water below. The party retrieves the Water Crystal, allowing Gloria to suppress its power. Anihal mentions that she saw a Crystal in Wiswald while she was performing in the circus. Withheir next destination decided, the party heads off.
Chapter 2:
In Wiswald, they discover the city overgrown with trees. The expanding foliage has destroyed many buildings and displaced many people. At the tower, they encounter Galahad Kelly, who goes berserk when the party attempts to gain entry to the tower. Unable to defeat him, they retreat to the Institute where they meet Roddy McGranate, Elvis' old friend. However, Roddy reacts in a similarly odd manner when they bring up the tower and kicks them out of the Institute. At the item store, they meet Lily, Roddy's wife, and another of Elvis' old friends. Lily tells them that she has been living out in Wiswald Woods with her daughter Mona. However, the shopkeeper informs them that Mona had died in an accident at the Institute. Confused by the strange behaviour, the party decides to sneak through the sewers into the Institute to get some answers. There, they find a talking painting controlling Roddy, who attacks the party. After defeating him, Roddy comes to his senses and joins the party in searching for his wife. In Wiswald Woods, they discover a similar talking painting and must fight Lily. The party then returns to Wiswald Tower, where they confront Galahad and free him from the control of yet another talking painting. They ascend the tower, only to discover that the Earth Crystal there is a fake. Emma's book reacts, revealing that a girl had been responsible for handing out the talking paintings. They discover a hidden doorway that leads them to the branches of the Great Tree. As they travel through the Secret Studio atop the Great Tree, they meet Folie, the holder of the Pictomancer Asterisk and the instigator of the strange happenings in Wiswald. Elvis gains the blessing of the Earth Crystal. After defeating Folie, they retrieve the Crystal and head off to Rimedhal.
Chapter 3:
Along the way to Rimedahl, Adelle notices that the typically cold and inhospitable environment has warmed up. They meet Gwilym, a baby dragon, who informs the party of a "stench of death" emanating from the city. In Rimedahl, they witness a judgment, wherein a person is accused of being a fairy and must 'prove' their innocence by flinging themselves off a high ledge into the Jaws of Judgement below. If the accused is innocent, the Lord of Dragons is supposed to save them.
Gameplay[]
Differently from other entries in the series, all of the characters base stats are the same. Seth’s stats are thus based only on his level, current job class, and use of Booster Buns. He is the only character to join as a completely clean slate, at both level 1 and job level 1 as a Freelancer, but that is not any significant disadvantage beyond the very early game.
As the main protagonist, Seth is the only character who is controlled outside of battles; only Seth can move in towns, and the other characters follow behind him in dungeons and on the overworld. Except in towns, Seth wields a sword while walking and can hit enemies with it to get an advantage going into battles.
