Silence in Bravely Default.
Silence (サイレス, Sairesu?) is recurring spell in the Bravely series. It is often a Black Magic spell that inflicts the status of the same name on the target, making them unable to cast magic abilities for a short period of time.

Silence is a level 2 Black Magic spell. It has a 75% chance to cause silence in one target. It costs 5 MP to use. It can be bought at Ancheim for 400 pg.
The spell is used by Ominas Crowe in all battles against him except the last.
Silence is also a level 2 Sword Magic spell, learned from the same scroll. It imbues a weapon with the status ailment silence for ten turns, providing a 75% chance to cause silence in one target when attacking. It costs 5 MP to use.
Ciggma Khint uses the spell every time he is fought.
Silence causes the affected character to be unable to use any magic. It is represented by a speech bubble reading "..." hovering over the head of the afflicted character.

Bravely Default: Praying Brage[]
Silence was a level 2 Black Magic spell available after learning the spell from the Silence Tome. When used, it would have a chance to inflict the Silence status on an enemy for three turns. The base Black Magic spell could only be used by the Black Mage, Red Mage, Arcanist, and Sage jobs. It cost 7 MP to perform.
Two unique versions known as Silence+ (サイレス+, Sairesu Purasu?, lit. Silence Plus) and Silence# (サイレス#, Sairesu Shāpu?, lit. Silence Sharp) also appeared as level 6 Black Magic spells. Silence+ attempted to inflict the Silence status on all enemies present on the battlefield for 3 turns. Silence# functioned similarly to the default Silence spell, but had a faster casting time. Both spells could be used by the previous jobs that had access to the ability beforehand, however, Black Mages and Red Mages would need specific equipment combinations to access rank 6 Black Magic. Both spells required 30 MP to perform.
To craft the Silence, players needed to have a level 4 crafting shop, and would need to gather the following materials - Parchment x3, Magic Stone Fragment x3, and Magic Stone x1. While Silence+ required a crafting shop level of 11, and players would need the following materials - Hieroglyph x25, Archdemon Stone x25, and Dragon Spine x20. Lastly, Silence# required a level 15 crafting shop and the following items - Hieroglyph x35, Archdemon Stone x30, Great Bat Wing Membrane x22
In addition, Silence also appeared a level 2 Sword Magic ability usable for the Spell Fencer and Enchanter jobs, allowing them to have a chance of inflicting the Silence status when attacking with the normal Attack command. The ability could be learned from the same Silence Black Magic tome.
Etymology[]
Silence refers to the lack of sound, which in this context means the inability to produce the sound needed to cast a spell, as is the effect of the Silence status this spell causes.
The ability originally appeared in the Final Fantasy, being introduced as a White Magic spell in the original Final Fantasy. The spell was part of White Magic in most of its appearances, being viewed as a protective status ailment, and it was first part of Black Magic in the Zodiac version of Final Fantasy XII, as it is in Bravely Default.
